Rare Art Nouveau Circa 1890 – 1910 Black and White “Kateroo” Cat Vase – 0000484
This very unusual and rare styled cat vase is strikingly similar to a character cat designed and created by David Henry Souter in 1907 for Royal Doulton. “Kateroo” was comical cat who appeared on plates and other wares such as candlesticks and as a striking standing model. All of which are very rare and hard to find. This piece, although not marked with the Doulton mark underneath, is marked with the words Cheshire Cat incised on the base.
Beautifully hand-painted in black white and red and very unusual with its pointy lower jaw and pointed swept-back ears.
A truly uniquely styled cat, which can only be attributed to Mr Souter unique design, but as its not marked with the Royal Doulton backstamp, it is unclear who made it. I have not seen another like it!
This lovely vase is free from any cracks or chips but does appear (on very close inspection) to have been repaired at the top and bottom of the handle at some point. You would never notice unless you looked really hard. Please see photos.
Standing at a majestic 22cm tall (to the tips of his ears – approx) and with a beautifully curled tail for a handle, this “Kateroo” styled vase would make a great addition to any Art Nouveau or cat collection. Give him a home!
