A VERY BRIEF HISTORY of Beswick Pottery…….

James Wright Beswick, with his sons John and Gilbert Beswick founded the pottery works of J. W. Beswick in 1894.  Based at Longton, Stoke-On-Trent the company originally made the well known and collected Staffordshire cats and dogs ornaments.  1921 saw the death of the founding father, James Wright Beswick and his sons continued the company and expanded production of high quality figurines by the mid 1930′s.

In 1936 Beswick started producing some of the best quality farm animals on the market at the time.  A number of incredibly talented modellers began working for Beswick and in 1947, Lucy Beswick suggested bringing to life some of the characters from the Beatrix Potter children’s books.   Without hesitation, in 1948, Beswick started manufacturing Beatrix Potter figurines and after the success of this expansion and within five years, Beswick started producing a range of Walt Disney characters and figurines in 1952.  This included well-known and loved characters such as Snow White, Bambi and the Winnie the Pooh characters by the late 1960′s.

In 1969, Royal Doulton took over Beswick and continued to use the name up until 1989, when they reintroduced the Beatrix Potter characters again between 1998 and 2002.

2002 also saw the end of production of all Beswick products by Royal Doulton until in 2008 when a Yorkshire company, John Sinclair (Sheffield) Ltd, purchased the Beswick name and started production of a new range under the John Beswick name.  These products omit the use of the word “Ltd” and distinguish them from earlier Beswick ware.

Today Beswick and its fabulous wares are some of the most loved and collected of all the pottery to come from the great potteries of Staffordshire.
