An unusual and rare find!
This vintage tin plate football themed mechanical (pendulum) clock was made by Vega, a Russian manufacturer of clocks circa the 1950’s to 1960’s. This particular clock is unusual in that most Vega clocks, of which I have a couple, are made from wood and come in classic mantel or wall clock designs similar to familiar Smiths or Perivale’s typical English or European clock designs. In other words, classy, chic and on trend for the period. This U.S.S.R. made clock is none of the above; made from tin plate and lightweight wood for the rear casing and with a chain system, which I am totally unfamiliar with.
The clock measures approximately 17cm by 17cm and is in used vintage condition: the metal face, which has a delightful lithograph printed period caricature of a boy playing football, does have age related pitting, some surface corrosion and paint loss, but I think this adds to its attraction, vintage charm and charisma. The clock mechanics are present but untested and so will require investigation and possibly restoration, but shouldn’t be a great challenge as its quite a simple set up from what I can see.
A charming and very collectable vintage Made in the USSR clock!
